The Top Home Decor Trends of 2020, According to Pinterest
t’s a new decade, which means new home trends are coming in hot! People are breaking up with wallpapered accent walls and all-white kitchens(though they’ll forever have a place in our hearts) and ushering in a new wave of fun trends for their living spaces.
Personally, I love any excuse to give my home a makeover, no matter how big or small, and so many of these trends are calling to me! Garden rooms? Kitchens filled with fresh microgreens for my salads? Sign me up. The following are among the home and design trends that Pinterest predicts will be huge in 2020—culled from millions of related pins on their site. Which ones will you try?
1. Lush, Lively Garden Rooms
Houseplants have been having their moment in recent years, and as a zealous indoor gardener, I couldn’t be happier! People are bringing more and more greenery into their homes, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down. In 2020, expect to see more indoor “garden rooms”—or for those of us who live in apartments, plant corners!—decorated floor-to-ceiling with all manner of plants.
If 2020 is going to be the year you finally develop a green thumb, here are some beginner-friendly plants to get you started and my mom’s advice on how to take care of them.
2. Growing Microgreens In The Kitchen
Speaking of plants, microgreens combine two of our favorite things: indoor gardening and cooking! If you’re not familiar with microgreens, they’re young vegetable greens that are packed with nutrients and flavor. These baby plants are easy to grow indoors, and there are so many ways to use microgreens in your cooking—this Spring Asparagus Tart with Feta and Microgreens, for instance.
3. Dedicated Audio Spaces For Music Lovers
If you’re more of a music-lover than a movie-buff, you’ll be happy to hear that “listening stations” are a popular new addition to many homes. These spaces are dedicated to all things music, and they’re often equipped with high-quality speaker systems and comfy furniture where you can kick back and enjoy your favorite tunes.
4. Sleek Spanish-Inspired Bathrooms
5. Thrifted Home Decor
One of the major themes in Pinterest’s 2020 trends is “conscious consumption,” a.k.a. being a little more thoughtful and eco-conscious with our purchasing. One way to do this is to opt for secondhand furniture instead of buying new stuff—you can find great gently-used pieces in thrift stores and on sites like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Plus, you’ll pay a fraction of the price you would for something new, so it’s a budget-friendly way to make some decor updates in the new year.
6. Quaint Japanese Soaking Tubs
Even if your bathroom isn’t big, you probably have space for a Japanese soaking tub, which are traditionally smaller than regular bathtubs. They’re deeper than average and feature a seat where you can kick back and soak away all your worries!
7. Pet-Friendly Patios For Your Furry Friends
As an apartment-dwelling puppy owner, I completely understand the appeal of having a dedicated dog patio—if only my apartment had a balcony! People are pampering their pets—both dogs and cats—by creating cool outdoor spaces where their four-legged friends can hang. It’s also ideal if you’re trying to potty train a puppy in an apartment, as you can include a patch of sod as an emergency pee area.
